GastroFish Project: 1st LTT in Greece

In November 2021, the 1st Short Term Joint Staff meeting of the GastroFish project was hosted by INNOPOLIS in Egion, Greece. Participants from member organizations including Yalova University, SUYMERBIR, AKSAM from Turkey, Innopolis from Greece, CEIPES from Italy, and DIDEAS from Spain attended the event.

The meeting was filled with activities centered on the aquaculture industry and fish consumption, including experiences in aquaculture, and culinary techniques. The participants visited the local fish market in the city and were introduced to the world of fish and seafood by the fishmongers. The fishmongers demonstrated how to clean different types of fish and provided tips for easier skinning and filleting. It was discovered that there are similarities in the names of various types of fish and seafood, particularly between the Greek and Turkish languages.

The team members were taken to the reefs of the Kleisova lagoon and then to the “Stefos” roe processing and packaging company in Aitoliko. The manager of the company gave a informative and engaging presentation on the simulation of the entire roe processing process, from collecting the eggs from the female mullet (known as “bafa” in the Mesolongitian dopiolalia) to its waxing and standardization.

Next steps of the project:
The next meeting for the project is planned for the end of January 2022 in Palermo, Sicily, which is the headquarters of the CEIPES organization. At the same time, the educational program for young people is currently in development and will be adapted for the project’s electronic learning platform.
